Effect of hepatitis B infection on gamma glutamyltransferase and some biochemical variables in human

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Introduction:Liver is a vital organ responsible for various functions in the human body, including
metabolism, immunity, digestion, detoxification and vitamin storage. Gamma-glutamyltransferase
(GGT) is a marker of oxidative stress and cholestasis. Because of its low specificity, clinicians
usually ignore its diagnostic value. The aim is to compare and analyze the clinical manifestations of
GGT in liver injury. It serves as a metabolism center of nutrients and wastes.
Methods: A study was performed on clinical data collected from patients who tested positive for
hepatitis B. They were selected from IbnSina Specialized Teaching Hospital in Mosul under the
supervision of specialized doctors between January 2025 to March 2025. Healthy individuals
(n=20)were included as controls.
The purpose of current study was to evaluate the alterations in total iron-binding capacity,
unsaturated iron-binding capacity, iron, also, estimate Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, Glutamic
pyruvic transaminase , Gamma Glutamyl transferase activities, Albumin, Total serum bilirubin, Creactive
protein, Urea, and Creatinine levels were assayed in HBV patients and healthy subjects.
Results: The results showed a decrease in unsaturated iron-binding capacity in patients with viral
hepatitis B compared to control group, iron was significantly higher in the group with viral hepatitis
B. The results also showed a significant increase in glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase , glutamate
pyruvate transaminase and gamma-glutamyl transferase activities of patients group compared to
control group. Also, total serum bilirubin and C-reactive protein levels were increased in patients
group compared to control group. A significant decrease in creatinine level of patient group, 69.05
mmol/L, compared to control group, 71.40 mmol/L. Significant correlation between GGT activity, as
well as with CRP levels and iron in hepatitis B patients were found, while an inverse significant
correlation was found between GGT activity and albumin level.
