Prevalence and Risk Factors for Otorhinolaryngological Diseases Among Diabetic Patients In a Nigerian Tertiary Healthcare Institution

Abstract
BACKGROUND: The occurrence of diabetes Mellitus (DM) all over the world is increasing at an alarming rate, and Nigeria is not an exception. Most diabetics are known to have ENT-related diseases.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors for ENT diseases in diabetic patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, hospital-based study was conducted over one year. Three hundred (300) patients were examined, and findings about biodata, family history, and onset of DM, treatment modality any other disease conditions present were documented.
RESULT: Among the 300 patients, 184 (61.33%) had ENT diseases. 116 patients (33.67%) were normal. Pharyngitis was the most common (36.41%); followed by rhinitis (28.26%) and Otomycosis (14.13%). The most common risk factor was family history, followed by uncontrolled blood sugar level.
CONCLUSION: ENT diseases are common among diabetic patients. For better quality of life of persons with DM, due cognizance of the risk factors, early recognition of ENT diseases, and prompt treatment are essential.
